Thank you for choosing to be part of the Matter community. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, the choices you have, and the rights granted to you by law. If you have any questions, email hello@getmatter.app.

Quick-read summary

  • What we collect: account details, reading lists, highlights, payment information, device log data, and data you authorise from connected services like Google.
  • How we use it: to provide and improve the app, sync your library, personalise recommendations, protect our service, comply with law, and—if you say yes—send you marketing.
  • Your choices: export or delete your data anytime, control push notifications, cookies, and other settings, and opt out of marketing messages.
  • Your rights: depending on where you live, you can access, correct, erase, or port your data and object to certain processing. California, EEA, UK, and other jurisdictions grant additional specific rights.
  • Security: we encrypt data in transit and at rest.
  • Retention: we keep data only as long as we need it for the purposes below, after which it is deleted or anonymised.

1. Scope

This policy applies to the Matter mobile and web applications, any related websites or in-app browsers, emails, integrations, sales or marketing activities, and events (collectively, the “Services”).

2. Information we collect

2.1 Information you provide

  • Identity & contact: name, email address.
  • Payment & billing: card details (processed by our payment processor), billing address, subscription tier.
  • Content & usage: articles you save, highlights, notes, tags, reading statistics, folders, AI summaries you generate, and feedback you submit.
  • Social logins: if you sign up with Google, Apple, or another provider, we receive information described in Section 8 below.

All information you provide must be accurate and kept up to date.

2.2 Information we collect automatically

  • Device & log data: IP address, device ID, browser type, operating system, language, referring URL, crash reports, pages viewed, time spent, and actions taken.

2.3 Information from third parties

  • Integrations: when you connect Google, Gmail, Kindle, Instapaper, or other services, we obtain the data you authorise (for example, article metadata and highlights). Matter’s use of Google APIs complies with the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
  • Vendors: payment processors, analytics providers, crash-monitoring tools, and email-delivery platforms share service data with us (for example, subscription status or delivery metrics).

2.4 Sensitive data

Matter does not intentionally process “special categories” of personal data (GDPR) or “sensitive personal information” (CPRA); however, the articles you save could reveal such information by inference. We process that content only to provide the core reading service, on the legal basis of contract performance or, where required, your consent. You may delete any item at any time.

3. How we share information

We never sell your personal data. We share it only as described below.

  • Service providers: hosting (Amazon Web Services), crash and error monitoring (Sentry), analytics (Mixpanel), email delivery (Sendgrid), payment processing (Stripe), beta testing (TestFlight), customer-support tools, and content-recommendation infrastructure. These providers act under written contracts that limit their use of your data to our instructions.
  • Business transfers: if we merge, acquire, or sell assets, user data may transfer as part of the transaction, subject to this policy.
  • Legal requirements & safety: to comply with laws or defend rights, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to prevent harm.
  • With your direction: if you use a share-sheet, export to Kindle, link with a third-party note-taking app, or otherwise instruct us to share your content.

4. International data transfers

We store data primarily in the United States. If you reside outside the U.S., we transfer your data under Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, or other legally recognised transfer mechanisms.

5. Your privacy controls & choices

  • Access / download: visit Settings → Account → Export Data to obtain a machine-readable copy.
  • Correction: edit profile details in Settings.
  • Deletion: Settings → Account → Delete Account will erase your library and personal data within 30 days (back-ups within 90 days).
  • Marketing opt-out: click “Unsubscribe” in any marketing email or disable Marketing Push in Settings.
  • Cookies: manage preferences in your browser controls.

You can also email any request to hello@getmatter.app or write to the address in Section 13. We will respond within 30 days (45 days for CPRA requests, extendable once by 45 days where necessary).

6. Retention

We retain personal data for the shortest period necessary.

  • Account data: as long as you have an account, then 30 days for active deletion and up to 90 days in encrypted back-ups.

We may anonymise data for statistical purposes and store it indefinitely.

7. Security

We use encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256), least-privilege access controls, regular penetration testing, and continuous monitoring. However, please also remember that we cannot guarantee that the internet itself is 100% secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Apps is at your own risk. You should only access the services within a secure environment.

8. Social logins and third-party accounts

When you choose “Sign in with Apple,” “Continue with Google,” or a similar option, we receive your name and verified email address. We use this information solely to create and authenticate your Matter account. Disconnect at any time in your social-network settings.

9. Children

Matter is not directed to children under 13 years old (U.S.) or under 16 years old (EEA/UK). If we learn we have collected personal data from a child below these ages without verifiable parental consent, we will delete it. Parents who believe we have such data should email hello@getmatter.app.

10. Data breach notification

If a breach of security causes unauthorised access to your personal data that is likely to result in harm, we will notify you (and, where required, regulators) promptly and no later than 72 hours after discovery, describing what happened and steps you can take.

11. California privacy notice

California residents have the right to:

  • Know the categories of personal information collected, disclosed, sold, or shared.
  • Access specific pieces of personal information.
  • Delete personal information.
  • Correct inaccurate information.
  • Opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information.
  • Limit the use of sensitive personal information.

To exercise these rights, use the in-app Privacy Center or email hello@getmatter.app. You will not face discrimination for exercising your rights.
